About Douglas Austin
Douglas Austin is a San Diego-based architect and business leader who heads AVRP Skyport as chairman and CEO, and has had a significant role in defining a vibrant downtown area that combines world-class contemporary living and retail elements. Among Douglas Austin’s roles has been chairing the Design and Construction Task Force for San Diego’s $2 billion Ballpark District and ballpark project. He has also guided related planning as Center City Development Corporation vice chairman.
Through AVRP Skyport, Mr. Austin has envisioned a wide range of building projects that extend beyond luxury high-rises and include affordable and transitional housing. One such project was Father Joe’s Villages, a 12-story mixed-use structure at 15th and Commercial that encompasses 75 dorm-style bedrooms of transitional housing, 61 units of affordable living space, and a day care facility.
Another such project Mr. Austin spearheaded as architect is the seven-story structure at 1501 6th Avenue. Half of the living space is reserved for affordable housing, while the other half is designed for senior citizens. A shared common open space includes balconies and decks, and is designed to encourage communication across the generations. An architecture graduate of California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly), Mr. Austin maintains board responsibilities on the Cal Poly President’s Advisory Council and Foundation Advisory Council.
